The following services are available at the cashier’s office of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank for customers that don’t have a bank account with the Central Bank:
- · exchanging of commemorative banknotes and coins to circulation banknotes or coins and honouring receipts that entitle the holder to commemorative banknotes (the Magyar Pénzverő Zrt. performs this activity on behalf of the MNB),
- · exchange of banknotes and coins withdrawn from circulation that can be exchanged to legal tender,
- · exchange of incomplete banknotes,
- · exchange of hard-to-recognise, damaged banknotes and coins,
- · expert examination of banknotes and coins suspected to be counterfeits.
During the performance of cash transactions the MNB does not make payments in smaller denominations than the banknote or coin denomination handed over by the client.
The Magyar Nemzeti Bank does not change foreign currencies and does not accept damaged or withdrawn foreign currencies.
Forint banknotes and coins are exchanged for other forint banknotes and coins by the post offices, commercial banks and mutual savings banks within the framework of denomination exchange.
MNB Decrees [MNB Decree No. 11/2011. (IX. 6.) and MNB Decree No. 12/2011. (IX. 6)] ensure guaranteed exchange of up to 50 pieces. Post offices, commercial banks and mutual savings banks are entitled to charge a fee for the denomination exchange, and/or tie the exchange transaction to the existence of an account kept with them or to other conditions.
